Why would we want to help our uterus shrink after vagenal birth? Because throughout the pregnancy journey our uterus continuously keeps expand to maintain a proper space for our growing baby.

You know during pregnancy our uterus can grow approx. 1 inch per week. Just think that our uterus will grow from 3 inches to about 40 inches weeks by the time you deliver.

Do you think that it will come back in shape after birth process. No dear it will not shrink on its pre-baby position but it remains bulgy upto 6 week after baby birth. And it gives us a mummy tummy look. Which is so weird for any mom. We all women love our figure and want to back in shape after baby birth ASAP.

Nothing to worry as our body is clever enough to uterus shrink on its own. How? I’ll tell you-our body regulates its metabolism and control digestion of foods and nutrients. But you can choose exercise to help the body.

Your uterus will begin to shrink immediately after baby birth. Exactly after 24 hours you will feel that your uterus contract and relax intermittently.

The contracting and relaxing of the uterus help close off the blood vessels which are attached to the placenta during pregnancy. Failure to close off these blood vessels can cause excessive bleeding, postpartum haemorrhage and a life threatening condition if left untreated.

Uterus shrink means not getting 6 pack abs. First make sure that your uterus is healing properly. This prevent not getting any blood clots remain in your uterus.

Although your uterus shrink on its own, but there are some things that you can do to help the body healing and shrinking process fast.

Obviously, breastfeeding helps a lot to lose weight. Besides weight loss there are many other benefits of breastfeeding.

The sensation of breastfeeding trigger the hormones to shrink the uterus by contracting and relaxing. This benefited in the three ways

  • Contraction and relation are like internal exercises which squeezes your uterus and help the body to shape into pre-baby body.
  • The more your uterus contracts and relaxes, the more blood vessels get tied off which results the quicker stop of postpartum bleeding.
  • The contracting and relaxing action pushes the remaining blood from the blood vessels and prevent blood clots.

Eating in small portion will also prevent you getting mummy pouch.

Drinking lukewarm water means not so hot and avoid chill or cold water during Postpartum period. I suggested water because fizzy drinks contain sugar which is not so good for your health.

You can add a bit of fresh lemon, root ginger and natural honey. All these help to flatten your stomach. But lukewarm water will help in three ways:

  • Drinking water keeps you hydrate, rejuvenate cells and promote healing.
  • Drinking a plenty of water dilute urine which cause no pain when you use the toilet if you have vagenal tearings.
  • Water flushes toxins out of your body, mainly of the abdominal area. Frequent toilets visit helps push down any blood clots.

MASSAGE YOUR STOMACH AND UTERUS AREA

Massage will trigger the hormones in your uterus and cause it to contract. The best of massage is to start from the top of your belly button, just below your diaphragm.

By using the tips of your fingers, massage the targeted area in a clockwise and anti-clockwise motion. Next, massage either side of naval. Use both of hands to massage the sides simultaneously. Try to massage in a clockwise and anticlockwise motion.

PLACE A HOT COMPRESS ON STOMACH OR TAKE A HOT SHOWER


My mother teach me this technique, who learned it from her mother…and so on! This is very safe technique used by women for years. But please don’t use this too often.

A hot compress should be used only once or twice a week- no more. Hot compress on stomach will force uterus to contract. Contractions may be involuntary and can be aggressive.  So, don’t use this technique too often.

Although hot compress helps relieve the pain from the contraction. Good advice – don’t use on a regular basis.

Instead of this you can take a hot shower or a sitz bath. This effects similar as hot compress but just not so strongly.

Freely use the abdominal massage technique because it work wonders!

ABOUT EXERCISE FOR UTERUS SHRINK

I know we are back to exercise topic again. I apologize for that. It’s nice to do exercise after birth process. But you have to wait a little longer. As long as you know your body is READY FOR EXERCISE.

But remember exercising too early after birth process can negatively affect on your body. It will make adverse effect if you try too early. You might end up damaging your muscles, causing or worsening Diastasis recti or tearing your stitches!

Keep patience! wait for a few months. Let your body to heal on its own. Give yourself  time to get love your back in shape body…

When you think you’re able to do exercise, start slow but steady! This will work better than joining a gym.
